Kefalonia, Greece
The beauty of Kefalonia is truly startling, and makes this gem of an island shine brighter than many of Greece's other island retreats. Hundreds of beaches circle the perimeter, with more than 90 that are so remote they can only be reached by boat. Cobalt blue waters seem brighter here, thanks in part to the reflections of the landscape's gleaming white cliffs. Choosing which beach to visit is a daunting task — all are splendid. With its unspoiled setting, Myrtos is possibly Greece's most photographed beach, Lourdato offers horseback riding on the beach, and Metaxata's beauty inspired Lord Byron to pen the poem, Don Juan. The island's Drogarati Cave and Caves of Mellisani delight visitors with their underground tunnels and enormous stalactites and stalagmites. When night falls, and the lure of the taverna beckons, check out Argostoli — the island's main town, which is home to many rowdy bars, clubs and discos.
