This is the main parking lot for the backcountry camping trailhead, which follows a path about a mile long in between the sand dunes. You obtain a permit from the main office at the entrance, and can camp overnight at a designated site of your choosing. No open fires though, as the flame turns the white sand into plaster of paris.
